Sažetak
Since the first children's libraries came into being decades ago, library services for children and young adults have been undergoing change, both in terms of public librarianship and in terms of new insights gained in the humanities, particularly in the fields of psychology, education and communication science. The changes are today reflected in all segments of operation of children&#8217 ; s libraries, ranging from a different approach to users, where the needs of individuals are put in a broader context of human rights to information, literacy, lifelong learning, culture, entertainment and personal development, to the changes in the age of users, in the materials, equipment, programs and activities for children and young adults, the interior design of the premises. The changed role of public libraries in the community and a new approach to the management of public libraries is also reflected in the services provided for children and young adults. Today there are 190 public libraries in Croatia, from those in cities and municipalities to those in small towns and villages. All city and municipal libraries have special departments for children, and libraries in small towns have so-called mixed departments (materials for both children and adults are located in shared premises). As a rule users of children&#8217 ; s libraries are children attending primary school (until the age 14-15), and after that they become users of the Department for Adults. However, in the last twelve months this has changed. Special departments for young adults &#8211 ; teenagers are being gradually introduced. This was a result of the concern many librarians expressed noticing that many young people, lost between the children&#8217 ; s and the adults&#8217 ; departments stop reading and using libraries. The translation of IFLA Guidelines for Library Services for Young Adults also contributed to setting up the first department for young adults in Croatia. The Medvesčak Public Library is one of the public libraries in Zagreb, whose numerous innovations in the last few decades have had a huge impact on the theory and practice of public librarianship in Croatia. It is the first public library that has computerized its operations and developed special programs for preschoolers and it is also the first public library that has set up a special department for teenagers. The premises of the Department for Young Adults differ to some extent from other parts of the library. Teenagers, who this department is intended for in the first place, participated in designing the premises (notice boards, wall newspapers, round tables like those in coffee bars, shop window with people sitting in it etc.). Teenagers were involved in all stages of department development - they suggested topics, literature and programs they would like to participate in, took part in interior decoration and chose the name for the department: IDI PA VIDI (Go and See). It is difficult to have a unique and full perspective of the development of libraries for children and young adults in general, as well as in Croatia, due to substantial differences between them. However, despite the uneven pace of their development, scientific insights, the theory of librarianship and the existing practices make it possible to emphasize five key characteristics of the future development of libraries for children and young adults in Croatia.
