Sažetak
Diamondoids are highly stable and rigid cage- like molecules with a structure resembling the diamond crystal lattice. However, unlike bulk diamond, diamondoids can be functionalized relatively easily and reproducibly.[1] Diamondoids differ in size, with the smallest representative being adamantane (Figure 1), while higher homologues can exist as different isomers.Due to their remarkable features, diamondoids andtheir derivatives can find applicationin many fields such as medicine, material science, nanotechnology, supramolecular chemistry, etc.[2]. Since diamondoids often engage in beneficial London dispersion interaction due to their bulkiness, [3]they can be applied as scaffolds in highly ordered nanotechnologysystems. For example, diamondoid derivatives can formnanowires only one metal atom wide.[4]Here the diamondoid cage actsas an anchor that attaches the nanowire to the metal surfacethrough on-surface reactions while simultaneously holding single metal atomsin place at defined distances. On the other hand, cationic diamondoid derivatives find uses in supramolecular chemistry since they can form ultra-stable host-guest inclusion complexesthat can be applied in drug delivery. For example, the permethylated diamantane diammonium salt binds to cucurbit[7]uril host with an attomolar dissociation constant, [5]rivalling the very stable avidin-biotin affinity pair ubiquitous in nature.
