Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of gender, BMI and socioeconomic status on the usage of different types of dietary supplements in the student population at the University of Osijek. Materials and methods: This on-line, anonymous questionnaire study was conducted during April 2018 by the use of specially designed questionnaire which contained questions about usage of DS and questions regarding the sociodemographic data of study participants. There were 438 students that are currently enrolled at the University of Osijek who completed the questionnaire. Results: There were 71.7% females and 28.3% males ; 59.8% of students who are studying in their hometown and 40.2% of those who are not studying in their hometown. There were 71.7% of students that used DS and 28.3% who didn't. Finally, there were 76.3% of students whose household income was 11000kn or less and 23.7% of those whose household income was 11001kn or above. Considering the type of DS, 58.4% of students used vitamins (mostly multivitamins 18.5%) ; 27.2% used herbal supplements (mostly garlic 21.7%) ; 65.3% used minerals (mostly magnesium 37.0%) and 40.2% of students used other DS (where proteins 25.3% were most commonly used supplement in this group). Considering the frequency of DS usage 25.1% of students consumed DS everyday, 21.0% of students consumed them two-to-three times per week, 10.0% one time per week, 6.2% one time per month and 37.7% less than once a month. The most common reason for DS usage was health improvement 41.6%. Study revealed that students who are studying in their hometown use DS more frequently (p=0.031) as well as students whose household income was 11001kn or above (p=0.024) Conclusion: Students at the University of Osijek use DS quite often. Thus, additional education about these substances and its effect on human health is needed in studied population.
