Sažetak
The chapter provides an overview of the basic demographic and socio-economic processes affecting the size, structure, and way of life of the Croatian island communities through time. Their development, stagnation or reduction are partly determined by their geographic position and distance from the mainland centers to which they gravitate. The proximity of the mainland has always been a significant factor in forming their islandness. Demographic trends on the islands are presented in detail in three time periods, divided according to the prevailing demographic processes: 1. The growth of the island population in the period 1857-1921 ; Depopulation 1921-1991 and Formal Demographic Growth 1991-2011. The history of relations between the islands and the mainland mostly boils down to the history of migration. Migration, which was often the answer to growing dependence and the relationship between the periphery and the centre, often revealed the islanders’ degree of insularisation. In order to demonstrate its influence on the structure of contemporary Croatian island communities, authors created a typology of islanders classified in seven categories in relation to the history of migration. The chapter also discusses one of the most significant demographic consequences of the migration - ageing of the population, particularly on the small islands as well as the level of their activity.
