Sažetak
Introduction: Competences are crucial for the nursing profession because they can guarantee the high quality and efficiency of the health care provided, and reflect the social value and status of the nursing profession. There is no validated scale for assessing the professional competencies of nurses in the Republic of Croatia. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to assess the psychometric properties of the NPC scale (Nurse Professional Competence) in Croatia, so that it could be implemented as a valid and reliable tool for assessing the professional competencies of nurses. Elaboration: The NPC scale consists of 35 questions grouped into six factor structures (Nursing Care, Value-based Nursing Care, Medical and Technical care, Care Pedagogics, Documentation and Administration of Nursing Care and Development, Leadership and Organization of Nursing Care) and was developed to explore professional competencies in nursing (Nilsson et al., 2018). The content and six-factor structure of the NPC fully correspond to the competencies prescribed by the Croatian Nursing Council and defined by the Nursing Act, which was the reason for choosing the scale in the research. The sample was based on 311 registered nurses, of whom 42 (14%) were male and 269 (86%) female nurses. All participants were from clinical practice. Their average age was 44 years (SD = ±11.3) and the average number of active years working as registered nurses was 18.7 (SD = ±10.1). All factors showed Cronbach's alpha values of >0.90. The study was conducted between April and July 2020. Conclusions: The results of the NPC scale in Croatia showed that the psychometric properties are appropriate in terms of content validity, internal consistency, temporary stability reliance and structural validation.
