Sažetak
Most of the late medieval cities of the North Adriatic as part of the Balkan Peninsula have been thoroughly researched in the field of architecture and urbanism. The artistic development, with the special attention on the development of paintings, has also been part of the research projects. However, the woodcarving arts and crafts have not been in the research interest until recently. Eventhough scientific analysis and historical data about the woodcarvers and woodcarvings have been researched, the results were published only sporadically. The least attention was given to the research of the wood trade. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to examine the wood trade of the Balkan Peninsula in the context of the North Adriatic as well as the impact that the wood trade had not only on the artistic shaping mostly the church interiors but also on the everyday life of the medieval cities. During the Middle Ages two main trade ports were in the towns of Rijeka and Senj, so through case studies of the preserved wooden artistic production in Rijeka and the island of Cres we would like to examine where from the influences came from. Venetian and middle European influences on the artistic production are well known, but we would try to answer the question whether there was a developed wood trade from the East European countries, i.e. the central Balkan peninsula, or not.
