During my medical studies, I was lucky to get a stipend from pharmaceutical industry (PLIVA) in Croatia to sponsor my specialization in dermatovenereology. For this, I am still grateful. In 1975, I started my academic career in the Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine at the University of Zagreb. Who were your most important teachers? From whom did you learn most? I am very grateful to all my teachers. I feel that I learned from academician Franjo Kogoj the most, who was a wonderful man, clinician and scientist. I also learnt from Professor Zorislav Žmegač and head doctor Vera Pasini. Over the last 25 years, I am thankful to Professor Johannes Ring who introduced me to international contacts in allergy and clinical immunology and in dermatology. Have you ever been president or in the leadership of an academic society? I was the President of the Croatian Society of Dermatology and Venereology. For 8 years, I was the President of Cathedra of Dermatovenereology at School of Medicine, University of Zagreb ; Head of Department of Dermatology and Venereology, University Hospital Center Zagreb (UHC) ; Head of Policlinic of Allergy, Immunology and Occupational Skin Diseases ; Chairman of the Expert Council of the UHC Zagreb ; President of Committee for Dermatovenereology of the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of Croatia for specialists examinations ; and Vice president of Croatian Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) and President since 2012. What was your greatest achievement in your professional life? In research, my greatest achievements were to combine pathophysiological research in allergy and immunology with clinical dermatology. The greatest achievements in my professional career were Head of Department of Dermatology and Venereology, School of Medicine and UHC Zagreb as the first woman to hold this position in Croatia. Also, I was the first woman President of CAMS as well as laureate with the Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding contribution to the advancement of dermatology in Croatia. I was the first Croatian member of the Collegium Internationale Allergologicum (CIA) and part of the leadership of EADV 2006– 2012 ; I am honorary member of the German Dermatologic Society. I got an award for promotion of international education and cooperation among dermatologists by the International League of Dermatological Societies (ILDS). I am proud to have organized the first Spring Symposium of the EADV in Cavtat/Dubrovnik, Croatia in 2010. Please list five of your best publications Lipozenčić J, Lacković G, Rode B, Čajkovac V. Coll Antropol 2010 ; 34(3): 865–869 (CC) What was your greatest disappointment in your professional life? As a disappointment in my professional life, I regard the fact that dermatology still and increasingly has to fight among medical specialties at both university level, but also in clinical, for the patients with regard to hospital beds and reimbursement issues. After all, I am proud of all achievements in my life with the help of God. My life has been fulfilled not only with academic career, but also with my family. Can you tell us the funniest episode from your professional life? On the island of Bermuda, I was accepted as CIA member and was asked on the ceremony by Johannes Ring who my favourite author was. I was so nervous that only Ernest Hemingway came to my mind – The Old Man and the Sea. But actually, my beloved author is Miroslav Krleža. Apart from dermatology, what is your major interest? Besides my work in dermatology and allergy, I am interested in arts, music and history. I like looking at the sea and playing bridge. Who are your favourite composer, writer and painter? My favourite composer is Frederic Chopin, favourite writer Miroslav Krleža and favourite painter Vlaho Bukovac. Their art enriched my life. Who would you list as the ten most influential dermatologists in history? In alphabetical order: Otto Braun‐Falco Karl Holubar Dušan Jakac Franjo Kogoj Michael Meurer Zdravko Periš Mladen Rupec Josef Söltz‐ Sötz Anđelko Wolf Zorislav Žmegač Who would you list among the top ten living dermatologists? In alphabetical order: Elisabeth Aberer (Graz, Austria) Jean Bolognia (USA) Sarah Brenner (Tel Aviv, Israel) Deedee Murrell (Sydney) Thomas Luger (Münster) Suzana Ljubojević Hadžavdić (Zagreb, Croatia) Gerd Plewig (Munich) Marcia Ramos‐e‐Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) Johannes Ring (Munich) Georg Stingl (Vienna) What will be the greatest problem for Dermatology in the next ten years? The greatest problem I see is the increasing trend towards aesthetic and corrective dermatology compared to research‐oriented dermatology and venereology in general. Another problem in dermatovenereology may be the multitude of different skin lesions in pandemic viral diseases, be it from side‐effects or from infection. Nowadays, we are witnesses of the terrible corona infection. Every 8/9 years there are epidemics of viral diseases with exanthematous eruptions which should remain our expertise in the field of dermatology. What will be the next breakthrough in the coming ten years in Dermatology? In the coming 10 years in dermatology and venereology, there will be a breakthrough in diagnostics due to ever improving technology, be it in imaging or in molecular biology and gene technology. We should never forget the value of a good history and hands‐on dermatovenereologist status.
