Sažetak
East coast of the Adriatic sea is characterised with the presence of Eocene flysch layers. One of the main properties of the Eocene flysch is its relatively thin layers. Those parts of the terrain which can be described as the soft rock according to the me-chanical means, exposed to the weathering, reduce the durability within the "engineering time scale". Those are the parts of a flysch system that dominantly influence stability of slope cut in flysch. Weathering process develops from surface into inner part of flysch mass throughout joints between layers. According to the mechanical properties of marl immediately after excavation, very high and almost vertical slopes can be cut in flysch mass. But because of the weathering, through the time a mechanical properties of the marls can be changed, and a sudden failure of the slope can occur. The form of a failure depend on an orientation of layers compared with the orientation of a slope surface. The paper deals with an influence of weathering on change of the mechanical properties (meaning change of slope stability) and propose possibility of slopes stabilisation. Failure mechanisms are analysed with numerical models. Two examples of sudden failures of slopes cut in flysch mass are presented, with the analysis of failure reasons.
