Sažetak
Halogen bond is a directional noncovalent interaction that plays a significant role in crystal packing. The interaction is achieved between a partially positive region of a halogen atom covalently bonded to an electron withdrawing group (halogen bond donor) and a Lewis base (halogen bond acceptor). With regard to the wide spectrum of Lewis bases studied to date, halogenide ions are poorly investigated halogen bond acceptors. In this study we attempted to prepare cocrystals of 1, 4- diiodotetrafluorobenzene (14tfib) with monohydroiodides of three diprotic organonitrogen bases: 4, 4’- bipyridine (44bipy), 2, 2’- bipyridine (22bipy) and 1, 4- diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (dabco). Crystallization experiments yielded single crystals for X-ray diffraction experiments and molecular and crystal structures of cocrystals have been determined. In prepared solids, 14tfib and iodide ions are bonded with C–I⋯I− halogen bonds, while organic cations are bonded to iodide ions through N–H⋯I− hydrogen bonds except in the cocrystal with dabco. It is interesting to note that structure of the cocrystal (44bipyHI)(14tfib) consists of two types of infinite linear chains. In the first one, donor molecules and iodide anions are connected via halogen bonds, whereas in the second one, hydrogen bonding is established between organic cations. Aforementioned cocrystal could be of great interest for further electronic materials studies.
