Sažetak
The number of national and international tourist travels is increasing on a yearly basis. Considering that tourism and insecurity do not go hand in hand, there was a drop in international tourist arrivals globally as an aftermath to the attacks of terrorism in the United States last year (2001). However, a recovery and a continuance of the traditional growth in tourism is expected in the year 2002. The tie between tourism and transportation is very strong, and the relationship is complex as the tourist structure is quite heterogeneous or diverse with respect to demand and potentials. All kinds of transport play a noticeable role in tourism, but the most common mode of transport is by air or by road. More than 80 per cent of the international tourists worldwide use these two methods of transportation. Air transport has had a dominant role (about 43 per cent) over the recent years. In terms of demand, the quality of transport services is very important, especially where air transport is concerned. For this reason, considering the alternative modes of transport, quality (including safety and security), along with competitive prices and acceptability, will significantly affect the use and development of air transport. It should be mentioned that transportation affects the development of tourism, and vice versa - tourism most certainly affects the progress of transportation. Air transport is the most suitable mode of transport considering that long-distance travel is on the rise and that a greater number of vacations are being taken during the year. The distance of a destination depends in significantly greater measure on air transport, for under such transport conditions, air transport is the most suitable mode of arrival in the tourist destination. This is the case with Dubrovnik, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.
