In late medieval sources the terms ‘Almissa’, ‘pirates’ and ‘the Kačićs’ were used interchangeably to designate the inhabitants of Omiš, which controlled the central Adriatic. The aim of this paper is to show how specific geographical pockets – like Omiš and Senj (later the seat of notorious Uskoks) – served as contact-points between the Adriatic and its hinterland. Both towns were situated in the wide Croatian border region where empires met: the Franks and Byzantines, later the Venetians, the Magyars, the Habsburgs, and the Ottomans. The pirates of Omiš indiscriminately intercepted all vessels that sailed by them, ranging from merchant to military fleets of Venice and Dalmatian cities, and even crusaders sailing east. All of them were forced to pay tribute for free naval passage. Sabljić discusses the cross-cultural maritime exchange in the Adriatic, mostly through the example of the pirate ship sagitta. The sagitta’s design may have been influenced by the Normans of South Italy, who had a strong presence in the Adriatic in the late 11th century. Sardelić analyses more broadly the pirate identity. The authors suggest that pirate identity evolved mostly through the blending of various political forces, but also religious, and social outcasts who found refuge in the town at the mouth of a river surrounded by mountain ranges.
