Sažetak
Aim: To perform the Croatian translation and validation of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS). Materials and Methods: Forward-backward translation of ECOHIS was made. The study included 233 participants (children aged 11-14 years ; 55% female) and their parents (84% mothers) recruited at the Clinic of dental medicine of the Clinical hospital center Rijeka and Zagreb. The Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ) and ECOHIS were self- administrated. Malocclusion severity was assessed using the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need Dental Health Component (IOTN DHC). Factor analysis, Pearson correlation and t-test were used in the statistical analysis. Results: Factor analysis of the ECOHIS indicated mixing of two domains with an overall explanation of 55.5% variability. Internal consistency was better for Child Related Impacts (CRI) (Cronbach α=0.825 ; mean inter-item correlation r=0.353) than for Family Impacts (FI) (α=0.583 ; r = 0.272). Excluding a single item (financial impact) would slightly increase the internal consistency from 0.583 to 0.585. A higher level of correlation was found between CRI and CPQ (r=0.451), parental health assessment (r=0.320), and appearance satisfaction (r=-0.343) compared to FI (r = -0.338-0.298 ; p <0.001). Both domains manage to discriminate individuals with lower and higher degree of malocclusion (IOTN DHC cut-off point ≥3): CRI 4.7 ± 5.2 vs 1.8 ± 1.7, FI 1.65 ± 2.085 vs 0.45 ± 0.820 p≤0.001). Conclusion: ECOHIS is adequate for use in Croatia.
