Sažetak
Ruined legacies of industry and industrialisation should be a warning for the future not to follow the same pathway and repeat the past mistakes. This sentence summarises the ideas behind the public engagement of a group of five committed women who gathered in 2019 to oppose the ways local politics manages industrial wastescapes. I discuss their work as an example of accidental environmentalism and a call for environmental justice established to battle secret political efforts to construct a landfill for medical waste in their backyards. Drawing on an ethnographic case study of deindustrialisation of the city of Sisak and following an emerging accidental group of women activists, this lecture offers an insight into community-instigated environmental response against non-transparent policies and hidden agendas of waste disposal industry. While the lecture begins with the end of industrial era in a medium-size socialist industrial city, it aims at deliberating what comes after it.
