Sažetak
AIM: To assess the relationship between maturation of mandibular wisdom teeth and changes of inclination of mandibular incisors and relationship between presence or absence of wisdom teeth and changes of inclination of incisors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs and lateral cephalograms of 65 subjects from the Nittedal Growth Study (Norway) were analyzed. Subjects were orthodontically untreated, without major malocclusions and facial disharmonies. They were recalled for check-ups at 12, 15, 18 and 21 years of age. Maturation of third molars was determined using the Cameriere’s index while inclination of incisors was measured in the reference to the mandibular plane. RESULTS: There was no linear relationship between the amount of maturation of the third molars and changes of the inclination of the mandibular incisors. There were no significant differences in the degree of maturation of third molars between the subjects with proclined or retroclined incisors. Hypodontia of third molars was not associated with the change of the inclination of incisors. Extraction of third molars at the age of 18 was not associated with the change of the inclination of incisors. CONCLUSION: The degree of maturation, the presence, absence or extraction of mandibular wisdom teeth are not related to the change of the inclination of mandibular incisors. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Created under the projects 13.06.2.1.53 and UNIRI BIOMED 18-71-1203 financed by the University of Rijeka. We thank the professor Vaska Vandevska Radunovic and the whole Department of Orthodontics at the Institute of Clinical Dentistry of the University of Oslo, Norway, for the access to the Nittedal Growth Study materials.
