Sažetak
Streptomycetes are the best known as a potent producers of various pharmacologically important compounds, mostly antibiotics. The expanding Streptomyces genome sequence data revealed that this genus possesses vast numbers of relevant biosynthetic gene cluster with potential to synthesize products of medicinal interest. These filamentous bacteria exhibit a complex and tightly regulated life cycle that involves the formation of vegetative hyphae that can differentiate into a chain of spores. Thus, streptomycetes are important for both, basic and applied research.
