Sažetak
In the last few decades we have been witnessing the process of globalization and strong influx of the English language and culture in countries all over the globe. The influence of English is most evident among the young, while most frequently borrowed words are from the field of sport, food, fitness, fashion, technology and business. The changes in linguistic structures happen on a daily basis and it is getting more difficult for linguists to classify them systematically. In the last decade a considerable increase in the use of English words and phrases has been noticed in the Croatian language, and it is sometimes difficult to determine whether these should be considered Anglicisms or merely foreign words used in code-switching. Linguistic borrowing is often accompanied by a cultural one. One of these examples is the American magazine Men’s Health, which was published in Croatia for 16 years and which was a source of numerous loans, both on linguistic and cultural level. In order to gain an insight into the most recent loanwords, I have analysed 60 Anglicisms in the last year’s Croatian editions of Men’s Health on orthographic, phonological, morphological and semantic level following theoretical and practical framework set by a renowned Croatian linguist Rudolf Filipović. The analysis has shown that there is an increase in the use of English phrases which are not completely assimilated into the Croatian linguistic system and cannot be categorised, since it is not clear whether they are a momentary trend or new partially assimilated loanwords.
