Sažetak
The area of metalliferous hills of north - western Bosnia as well as their natural extension in central Croatia, Petrova and Trgovska gora hills was actively exploited on a large scale during Antiqiuity and Middle Ages, while traces of iron exploatation and production in preceeding archaeological periods are scarce. Nevertheless, several sites in the wider region dated to iron age show signs of local iron production. During an intensive sistematic field survey, surface debris indicating iron production within the fortified Early Iron age settlement was identified. The site is situated in the lowland area (Donje Pokuplje village), near the confluence of Dobra and Kupa River. Traces of iron production debris were found within the grounds of the settlement (Pogorelec location within the city of Sisak) dated to late hallstatt period (6th – 5th century BC). The site was a major regional centre of the period, with established bronze metalworking, textile and ceramic production. In the following periods, a Celtic (Segestica) as well as Roman age (Siscia) regional centres were founded in the near vicinity of the Pogorelec site. Iron production and trade was a major activity during the Roman period in this area.
