Sažetak
Language barriers interfere with the dissemination and use of scientific and technical information in many countries. There is also evidence that such obstacles will continue to grow as more countries make progress in science and technology and develop their industries. In this presentation we examine the problem from the point of view of a minor country which faces the problem of worldwide transfer of knowledge on many levels and in many forms. The particular aim of the study, conducted on a large sample of scientists engaged in different subject areas, was to survey awareness of, and attitudes to, foreign language material and to find out whether the foreign language barrier was an important hindrance to research activity. The results of the study confirm the thesis that people in the minor language groups have to be, out of necessity, proficient in more than one language. It is also shown that, although a language barrier is to some extent evident, there is indeed an overall lack of appreciation of the value of information lost as a result.
