Sažetak
Alloimmunization is a known risk of transfusion therapy caused by the exposure to foreign red blood cell (RBC) antigens. Because there are hundreds of polymorphic epitopes of blood groups, each transfusion of red blood cell units is inevitably mismatched. However, alloimmunization is not observed in all transfused patients. Genetic factors that may influence the risk of alloimmunization are not sufficiently explored. HLA molecules may contribute to the recognition and presentation of foreign antigens and to the potency of immune responses that result in the production of antibodies.
