Sažetak
This paper presents an overview of many features relating to the translation of texts from Croatian into English: market volume ; genres of texts translated ; translators with Croatian as their native language and those with English as their native language ; approaches to translation ; resources available to trainee and practising translators. This paper commences with a snapshot of the quantity of texts translated from Croatian into English, with comparative data presented in the other direction, from English into Croatian. This is followed by data on the genres of published books and texts. The central part of this paper focuses on translators working from Croatian into English, and the skills sets that they acquire to become translators. There has been a large increase in the translation of texts between Croatian and English in recent years, not least due to Croatia’s accession to the EU in 2013, and Croatian becoming its 24th official language. The majority of translators working in this direction are Croatian native-speakers, working into their non-native language. This presents certain challenges, which can be addressed through training that focuses on the function that a text has in the Croatian source language and source culture, and how that same function is to be achieved in the English target language and target culture. This paper outlines the main features of Skopos Theory, an approach that foregrounds achieving functional equivalence in the other language. The role of parallel texts, i.e. similar texts that perform that function in the target language that can guide the translator in how they structure and present the translation. Lastly, this paper presents a resource that features eleven texts from a variety of genres translated from Croatian into English, Translating from Croatian into English: A Handbook with Annotated Translations. These texts include media, educational, legal, economics, medical, cultural, historical, literary, tourism and culinary texts. Theoretical principles of text analysis are represented in a clear and direct way and show how the translator was guided by these to achieve a functionally appropriate English translation. Annotations in this handbook guide the reader to identify the inter-cultural and inter-lingual differences between Croatian and English and how these can be addressed and resolved. Five translation university instructors and practising translators (four from the University of Zagreb, one from Monash University) contributed to this handbook that represents a contemporary and step-by-step guide for those wishing to acquire practical skills to translate texts across a wide variety of fields.
