Sažetak
As one of the most pressing issues of our time, climate change has received increasing coverage in the media. Critical discourse analysis of media discourses on climate change can greatly contribute to uncovering the mental models that underlie the “stories” that are constituted and affirmed through this type of discourse, as well as ideologies that are promoted through it (Stibbe 2015). This paper focuses on the interdiscursive relationship between climate change discourse and scientific discourse. Our initial assumption was that incorporating scientific discourse and evoking voices from the scientific community is a strategy used to enhance the credibility of the information presented in the media reports on climate change and gain legitimacy. To test this assumption we conducted a textual analysis of a corpus of texts published in the internet editions of two Croatian daily papers (Večernji list and Jutarnji list) and two English daily papers (The Guardian and The New York Times) in two periods (between 16 October and 16 November 2018 and 16 October and 16 November 2019). To operationalize the analysis we asked the following research questions: what types of scientific discourse are used in media reports on climate change ; what are the modes of discursive embedding of scientific discourse in these reports and what is their function ; how are scientists presented and what roles are they given in the climate change discourse in the analysed reports.
