Sažetak
The Roma population is one of the oldest and numerous minority communities in the Republic of Croatia. The relation of the majority population towards them was often marked by violent conflicts and there was a assimilation discourse in the policies of the state and local authorities towards them. Attempts to assimilate Roma were present in Croatian areas, especially in the 18th Century and its peak was in the genocidal policies of the Ustaša authorities towards them during the Second World War. The socialist period did not allow for special commemoration of Roma victims who were “drowned” in the official commemoration of “victims of fascist terror”. Nonetheless, newly organized postwar Roma organizations have started since the late 1970s with individual commemoration of Roma war victims. After establishing the Republic of Croatia at the beginning of the 1990ies, the issue of commemoration of Roma victims has been pushed to the margins of the official culture of memory of the victims of World War II. Relation to this is only changing at the beginning of this century, when the Roma were officially recognized status of the national minority. It is particularly important to point out the role of Roma representative Veljko Kajtazija at the Croatian Parliament, who started 2012 with officially commemorations of the Roma war victims in cooperation with some Roma non-governmental organizations
