Sažetak
The north Adriatic indenter is bounded to the west by the polyphase Schio-Vicenza fault system (SVFS), which trends at high angle (NW-SE) to the South Alpine fold and thrust belt (ENE-WSW). The SVFS originated during the Paleogene extensional tectonics, which affected the western Veneto and was reactivated in a strike-slip to transtensional regime during the Neogene shortening of the chain. In the northern part, the SVFS represents a sharp boundary between the foreland of the belt (Veneto-Friuli plain) and the structural high of the Lessini-Berici-Euganei block. This block, practically unaffected by the Alpine shortening, separates the eastern from the western Southern Alps and the related Neogene foreland areas. In the southern part, east of the Euganei Hills, the SVFS is buried beneath the Quaternary alluvial cover. In the subsurface south of Padova, seismic data, acquired by Eni for hydrocarbon exploration, shows a structural complexity with a block mosaic subsiding towards NE, due to the NE dip of the synthetic faults bounding the blocks. The fault throw decreases upwards suggesting that a polyphase activity started in the Mesozoic time and continued until the Present, since the base of the Quaternary and, sometimes, an intra-Quaternary unconformity are offset by some faults.
