Sažetak
Anthropogenic pollutants in the aquatic environment have significantly increased over the last few decades. Among these pollutants, heavy metals, including cadmium, have long been recognized as major marine pollutants. The aim of this study was to assess the response of lightly silicified marine diatom Cylindrotheca closterium to cadmium regarding cell physiology and cell morphology. We designed an experiment in laboratory controlled conditions where the diatom C. closterium was exposed to different Cd concentrations in the range 1–1000 µg L-1. The level of stress caused by cadmium exposure was assessed regarding cell growth and cell morphological changes. The results of this study contribute to better understanding the effects of heavy metal Cd on diatoms and show that morphological characteristics assessed by AFM may be a valuable indicator for metal contamination in the aquatic environment.
