Sažetak
Design and innovation have come into the focus of almost every industry, because turning a “simple product into a successful business” can only be brought about by a combination of design and innovation. Design can contribute to the system of innovation through finding new ways of working, creating new research and development-research projects and through training experts of a new orientation. Design slowly but surely converges with a broad aspect of industries and technologies and creates products, services and production innovations through interdisciplinary collaboration ; improves quality, competitiveness and demand and thus promotes economic growth and employment. The wood sector of the Republic of Croatia must view design as part of the business strategy and as its support ; as a factor in the development of consumer-oriented, marketing-driven products. Customized and consumer-oriented products and services can only be achieved by linking design to research and development and commercialization at different stages of the value chain. Marketing, public relations and price reductions can help in the short term, but investing in design and innovation of the highest quality is what is really needed in the future. Without that, Croatian industries are losing the marketing battle with sophisticated foreign brands and keeping pace with innovation.
