Sažetak
The poster presents the analysis of making of national heroes in contemporary Croatian society based on three case studies of heroization of prominent actors in Croatian war of independence – a political leader, a glorified warrior and a musical celebrity. It approaches hero-making as a process of social and political construction in which heroism is continually negotiated between various social actors (Scheipers 2014 ; Kitchen 2019). The analysis focuses on ideological split in the society and contested and competing imageries, narratives and practices related to the recent national past – dissolution of Yugoslavia and forming an independent state through traumatic war conflict. Based on the analysis of political discourse, media discourse and ethnography of public events and public spaces, the poster adresses following questions: What are the mechanisms of hero-making? What social actors are engaged in hero-making and how are they interrelated? What sociocultural and political needs heroism satisfies? What social structures it (un)legitimates? What are the dominant conceptions of heroism and how are they constructed? What social tensions arise in that process? What is the role of hero-figures in constructing and mediating national memory? What conceptions of national identity hero- figures embody and how are they transformed and negotiated within broader sociocultural and political changes?
