Sažetak
Air pollution poses a major threat to health and climate today. Numerous pollutants, including particulate matter (PM), are continuously emitted directly into the atmosphere from pollution sources or are formed in the atmosphere from pollutant precursors. Among the PM constituents, black carbon (BC) is recognized as the primary pollutant resulting from incomplete combustion of mostly fossil fuels and biomass. In order to study temporal variation of the aerosol optical properties and to evaluate major BC emission sources in the coastal Central Adriatic region, a field campaign was conducted from February to July 2019 at the coastal suburban site of Croatia (43°43'N, 15°52'E). Real-time continuous PM2.5 black carbon measurements were performed by an Aethalometer model AE33, while 48-h aerosol samples were collected simultaneously. The low average BC concentration of 0.57 µg m-3 was observed, with short term peak values reaching up to 25 µg m-3. Aethalometer model source apportionment (Sandradewi et al., 2008) optimized by levoglucosan concentrations obtained from off- line filters allowed for the first time to evaluate the contribution of BC resulting from biomass burning (BCbb) and fossil fuels (BCff) for the study area.
