Sažetak
Northern Adriatic (NA) is a shallow, semi-enclosed area, under strong influence of river water (Po) as well as the advection of the south-Adriatic oligotrophic water along the eastern shore, that contribute to very variable and complex circulation. This area is known to be episodically eutrophic but in recent years, it is characterized with oligotrophication. Long-term (1989-2017) seasonal and spatial distribution of the organic matter content (dissolved and particulate organic carbon, DOC, POC) and its properties (surface active substances, SAS) for the Rovinj – river Po transect, clearly show that NA is a very dynamic system, regarding vertical, horizontal and temporal distribution of the OM. The distribution of OM is highly influenced by hydrographic conditions and circulation controlled by local (changing inflow of freshwater, mainly Po river) and global influence (inflow of different water masses from the Ionian Sea, BiOS). Variability of OM is tightly bound to salinity changes. Measured DOC, POC, SAS parameters imply on certain ecosystem changes regarding organic matter properties. This study underlines: a) OM especially its DOC fraction can be taken as a valuable indicator of climate change, b) importance of the long-term investigation.
