Historically, it was considered that loaches from Croatian rivers of Adriatic watershed belong to the same species that also inhabits rivers of Danubian watershed. It has been shown that the fishes that were until recently considered as one species are a complex of more species and subspecies. We compared morphological characters of loach species from 4 Croatian rivers: Neretva (Cobitis narentana), Cetina (Cobitis dalmatina), Zrmanja (Cobitis sp.) and Drava (Cobitis elongatoides) with the aim to find differences between them and to confirm or deny their belonging to extant taxonomic categories. 25 morphometric and 8 meristic characters were determined on 226 specimens from four rivers. Principal Component Analysis (PCA), using a correlation matrix, was explored to assess morphometric variations between fishes from different rivers. This technique separated all four population and revealed differences between them. ANOVA, as univariate analysis was also explored and it showed significant distinctions among species. Differences in morphometric and meristic characters between Croatian loach populations confirm belonging of populations of Neretva and Cetina in separate species, but also reveal the possibility that loaches from Zrmanja form not just subspecies, but also a different species.
