Sažetak
Dental implants are a reliable and well-known option for treatment of partial or total edentulous patients ; it is generally considered to be successful therapy in most patients. However, prior to dental implant placement, a detailed medical history should be taken. In this way systemic illnesses and the use of the medicines that may affect the success of dental implant therapy are assessed. Peri- implantitis is an infectious condition or inflammation of soft tissues, causing bone loss around an osseointegrated implant. The etiology has been identified as bacterial biofilm forming on the implant surface that interacts with the host tissue and leads to destruction of the supporting bone. Dental implant failure can be classified as early and late and caused by local or systemic factors. The diagnostic parameters include color of the gingiva, bleeding on probing (BOP), deep peri- implant pockets, mobility, suppuration, excessive loss of bone on X-ray and microbiology. Treatment varies from nonsurgical therapy with or without adjunctive local- antibiotics to surgeries that include flap debridement procedures with or without osseous resection and implantoplasty. To date there is no gold standard in treatment of peri-implantitis. Standard therapy consists of nonsurgical phase which includes mechanical, ultrasonic or laser debridement, either alone or in combination with antiseptic or antibiotic agents or both, as well as a surgical phase with regenerative or resective techniques.
