Sažetak
INTRODUCTION: According to the revised curriculum at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry University of Zagreb, one year trainee internship for graduated pharmacy students has been replaced with the six month Professional training for pharmacists. Professional training for pharmacists programme is based on the Croatian Competency Framework (CCF), the official document of the Croatian Chamber of Pharmacists (CCP), and comprises a list of behaviours and competencies that need to be adopted in the pre- registration period. AIM: To monitor the students' competencies development during the six-month pre-registration period. METHODS: In this prospective, observational study, all students attending Professional training for pharmacists in the period from January 2016 to March 2017, have been included. The data have been collected by using the CCF, a validated tool for assessment and self-assessment of pharmacists’ competencies [1]. Students have self-assessed themselves at two time-points (T1 = following six weeks and T2 = following six months) on a four-point scale indicating how often they demonstrated each behaviour, i.e. “rarely”, “sometimes”, “usually” to “consistently”. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-six students that have self-assessed themselves were predominantly female (n=110, 87, 3 %), with a median age of 24 (23- 27) years. Both, at the beginning and at the end of the Professional training for pharmacists students perceived themselves as the most competent in the “Personal and Professional competencies” cluster (2, 92 ± 0, 516 and 3, 40 ± 0, 439, respectively), whereas the poorest performance was noted in the “Pharmaceutical Public Health Competencies” cluster (1, 94 ± 0, 741 and 2, 93 ± 0, 705, respectively). During the six-month pre-registration training, students' development of all CCF competencies was significant (p< 0, 001) with the greatest improvements seen in the following competencies: health promotion, patient consultation and assessment of medicines and medical devices. CONCLUSION: CCF proved as a useful educational tool in monitoring the development of students' competencies during Professional training for pharmacists, thus providing a link between training and practice and underpinning competency led graduate training programme.
