Sažetak
BACKGROUND: The physical stress of football referee could resemble that in football player playing in the midfield. However, there is an age difference between football players and referees and considering referees usually are not full-time professionals, they must adapt their lifestyle to be able to cope with the demands imposed by the players. AIM: The aim of this study was to examine lifestyle and physiological characteristics of Croatian football referees. METHODS: Forty male referees were involved in the study. There was even number of subjects from coastal and from continental region of Croatia. All subjects were measured for weight and height, blood pressure and heart rate, as well as vital capacity and VO2max during their usual testing before the start of the playing season. Standardized questionnaires were used to obtain data on lifestyle: usual physical activities and sedentary behavior, and nutritional habits. RESULTS: Results show that 16 subjects were over weighted, with normal values of blood pressure and heart rate, and most of them were within fair fitness level values of VO2max. Referees from coastal region had higher weight and BMI compared to referees from continental region. Vital capacity was from 70 to 171% of expected value, without the difference between regions. The was no difference between regions in VO2max, and in blood pressure and heart rate. Usual leisure time activities were similar for all subjects, except for time spent sitting and driving in a car, bus or train, which was higher for subjects from coastal region. CONCLUSION: Although referees are physically active, they also spend much of their time in sedentary behavior. Time spent in sedentary behavior reflects on their weight and BMI.
