Sažetak
Through the convergence of political, economic and cultural transformations in the mass media industry, the power of popular culture has increased to the point that it affects theoretical and practical aspects of democracy. In this paper the impact of popular culture on the political sphere is examined within a framework of celebrity politics which downplays ideology and expertise and focuses on the issues of presentation and appearance. From that standpoint, there has been a shift of emphasis from political parties to individuals who acquire celebrity status, whether as policymakers or activists, and become celebrity politicians, regardless of their knowledge and experience. Taking into consideration the influence of politainment that promotes superficial instead of essential, emphasizing emotional involvement, and disregarding the demand for rational judgement, the research investigates its characteristics and consequences that it has on the problem of inclusion and participation. The analysis aims to provide an answer to the question does the celebrity politics serve the purpose of democracy, make no difference to it or even harm it.
