Sažetak
The Roman Salona was created on one of the geographically most suitable places of the eastern Adriatic coast. After it was controlled by the Illyrian Delmatae and the Greeks from the island of Vis (Issa) in the 1st century BC Salona was constantly in the hands of the Romans. From that period on there is an increasing number of immigrants from Italy who, during the Caesar's administration in Illyricum, formed a community of Roman citizens. Soon it became a colony and the capital of Roman province of Dalmatia. The city had the forum, amphitheater, theater, aqueduct, huge fortificiations, thermae, many sanctuaries for roman cults and deified emperors, huge necropolis which literally encircled the city, spacious harbour, excellent road links with the hinterland.... The wider city area had between 40 and 60 thousand inhabitants. By the end of the 3rd century Salona had it's Jewish as well as the Christian Community. Diocletian's persecution of Christians AD 304 strengthened the Salonitan Church. Over the graves of martyr bishop Domnio, Five martyrs and martyr st. Anastasius were built large cemeterial basilicas. Salona slowly changed her face. The former centers of social life were abandoned and slowly the church center occupied the entire quarter in the eastern part of the city with basilicae geminae associated with baptisterium, catechumeneum, two oratories and the bishop's palace. Salona was key Byzantine stronghold during the Justinian's war operations against the Ostrogoths. Barbarians interrupted the life in Salona in the first decades of the 7th century. The Croats settled on the edges of the city and the life of the medieval Solin will be strongly marked by the presence of powerful Croatian national rulers - Duke Trpimir, Queen Jelena and King Zvonimir.
