Sažetak
Head and neck cancers include different malignancies that develop in and around the throat, larynx, nose, sinuses and mouth. Most head and neck cancers are squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), arising in flat squamous cells. Each year, HNSCC is diagnosed in more than 600, 000 people worldwide, with about 50, 000 new cases. Out of them, one type is laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC) which represents 2-5% of all malignancies worldwide and they account for roughly 200, 000 deaths per year. Keeping in view the importance of disrupted circadian rhythm in malignancies including HNSCC, we present our preliminary data on expression of circadian clock genes in LSCC. We examined malignant and healthy adjacent tissues of patients suffering from LSCC to establish a correlation between the expression of the circadian clock genes and LSCC. Our results point to downregulation of PER1, PER2, PER3, CRY1, CRY2, CK1ε, BMAL1, CLOCK and TIM genes. Furthermore, upregulation of NPAS2 has been found, though it was not statistically significant. Among these downregulated genes, PER1 and PER3 showed statistically significant downregulation, and the strongest downregulation has been seen in PER3. These results suggested a possible association between deregulation of circadian clock genes expression, especially PER3 and LNSCC.
