Sažetak
When Croatia became the EU member, according to the Directive 2005/36 EC and 2013/55 EU which is obligatory for all member states, midwifery in Croatia became a regulated profession. The Directive prescribes the necessary education and competences of midwives, defines the profession on a national level and requires from the member states to synchronize their legislation with it. According to the Directive, the member states have to set a minimal standard of competences which, among other things, should include: follow up of a normal pregnancy, preparation for delivery and conducting of physiological delivery. In accordance to the scope of work which midwives are supposed to perform independently, a necessary level of education is required which implies high education including a series of specific knowledge and skills, all prescribed by the Directive 2005/36 EC and 2013/55 EU. According to the Directive, among the criteria of formal education for midwives which is carried out in the Republic of Croatia, there is an education on the undergraduate level, full time and of at least 3 years duration. It includes 180 ECTS credits or least 4600 hours of theoretical and practical training, of which at least one third is clinical practice. The member states should ensure that institutions carrying out midwifery training are responsible for theoretical and practical part of the training during the whole study programme. Appendix V, item 5.5.1. states that the training programme for midwives should guarantee that someone has acquired prescribed knowledge and skills, where special emphasis is put on practical and clinical training, which should be performed under adequate supervision. The Undergraduate Midwifery Study Programme in the Republic of Croatia as a full-time study programme is performed at the Faculty of Health Studies of the University of Rijeka and at the University of Split. Both are aligned with the Directive, and the acquired qualifications are automatically recognized in the EU.
