Sažetak
In the first half of the 18th century, and especially after 1715, Dalmatia became the most important Venetian overseas possession. At that time, the chief commander of the Venetian army was Johan Matthias von der Schulenburg, who wrote four reports on Dalmatia. He proposed various defence measures, from the restructuring of military units to spatial reorganisation and fortification interventions. In spite of his war experience and great reputation, gained mainly by the glorious defence of Corfu in 1716, his proposals were not always approved in Venice. This article provides a chronological overview of Schulenburg’s reports on Dalmatia (1718- 1732), which resulted from his systematic tours of the province. It presents an outline of his ideas and offers an interpretation of his mature concept for the defence of Dalmatia.
