Sažetak
Designing a test involves adhering to a complex and challenging set of procedures. As teachers, we need to keep in mind that the test should reflect aspects of language teaching and language use. In addition to the principles of testing (fairness, accountability, validity, reliability), a humanizing aspect should permeate the test which means that students should have the opportunity to do their best, should be involved in their assessment, and be treated as individuals. At the Faculty of Teacher Education, University of Zagreb, future primary English teachers intensively work on developing proficiency in their receptive and productive language skills throughout their five-year education. In accordance with the programme of study, Graduate programme of study of primary education in combination with the study of the English language, their achievement is checked in the third year of study by means of a Test of Language Competence (TLC). The test has been designed and calibrated based on educational outcomes, the level of language knowledge and the population involved. It tests five areas of language competence, namely listening comprehension, language in use, reading, writing and oral performance. The article will show how task types have been developed and used in order to test the skills mentioned.
