Sažetak
A speaker's lexical competence and lexical breadth are important factors of literacy, knowledge and attitudes of preschool children in relation to writing and reading. When children start attending school, they bring along the knowledge of language they had acquired at an early and preschool age. Research has confirmed that the level of lexical breadth is a predictor of both the success in mastering reading and writing, and school success in general. During early lexical development, synonyms are indicators of a high level of linguistic knowledge since they represent a lexical extension, i.e. a corpus which is not necessary for achieving functional communication. Additionally, synonyms are also indicators of metalinguistic awareness of a speaker. This study attempts to determine the impact of the relationship between the level of L1 synonym knowledge of Croatian preschoolers and their linguistic development. It also attempts to investigate the effect of parallel language codes on the knowledge of synonyms in the native tongue. The research was conducted with preschool children in kindergartens across Croatia. The results confirm the complexity of the phenomenon of lexical breadth and early literacy and indicate the enhancing effect of the complex field of interlanguage influences on the development of speakers' lexical competence.
