Sažetak
This thesis analyses translations of two Christmas-related picturebooks. Specifically, the aim of the thesis is to examine strategies used in the translation of culture-specific items in Auntie Claus (1999) by Elise Primavera and Badnja večer – The Night Before Christmas (2016) by Tom Sperling. The thesis explains the criteria of selection of the two picturebooks and examines how translators’ choices affect the overall result of translation. It begins with a short overview of the development of Anglo-American and Croatian Christmas culture. The following chapter discusses the role of the picturebook translator and introduces two opposed methods often used in translation of culture-specific elements: domestication and foreignization (Venuti 1995). It also addresses aspects that need to be taken into consideration when translating picturebooks in particular. An analysis of the translated picturebooks is followed by final remarks about the implications of translating the culture-specific items in the context of Christmas tradition in the target culture.
