Sažetak
This master thesis deals with translations of children’s literature – more speicifcally, with translations of picturebooks, their position and importance. It deals with the picturebook as a work of art, a commercial item with physical features that is based on page-turning which reveals a synergistic relationship between the visual and verbal discourse. All this has an impact on both the reader and listener. Most of all, the thesis deals with the ways in which translators manage to preserve the features that are characteristic of a particular picturebook and the problems they face while translating. This study focuses on the analysis the Czech and Croatian translations of two well-known picturebooks: Where the Wild Things Are (1963) by Maurice Sendak and The Gruffalo (1999), written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Each of these picturebooks has special features which translators need to address. In Where the Wild Things Are it is the rhythm created through sentence length and carefully chosen punctuation, and in The Gruffalo it is the rhyme (the book is written in rhyming couplets). Special attention is also given to punctuation, intensifiers, possible deviations, additions, omissions, rearrangements, and changes in meaning. The results and observations are presented in the discussion, which also considers the results of similar research.
