Sažetak
Over the last 60 years one first and six retranslations of Robinson Crusoe into Croatian have been published. By Croatian standards, this is an exceptionally high number of retranslations of the same source text. Further, these retranslations were produced in a relatively short time span. These facts call for a closer examination of the motives for the book's retranslations. The underlying assumption in this research is that the reasons for retranslations should be looked for beyond traditionally suggested „ageing“ of retranslations (Berman 1990). Recent research (Koskinen and Paloposki 2003, 2010, Monti 2011) suggests that the causes for retranslations should be looked for in a range of extra- textual factors ranging from ideological to economic issues. The target text's function in the target culture (its inclusion on the national primary school syllabi since the 1950s) coupled with political and ideological changes in Croatia seem to be closely related to the need for retranslations. Therefore, the research focuses on how political and ideological changes in the target culture, manifested inter alia, in the publishing sector, informed the need for retranslations and shaped the particular target texts and their paratexts. The corpus includes the source text and five target texts produced in 1951, 1954, 1986, 2006 and 2008. Textual analysis of the selected chapters of the source text and corresponding target texts is combined with an examination of a number of paratextual elements that can help us see how the target text is repositioned in order to correspond with the target culture needs.
