Sažetak
People listen in many different ways to different topics, depending on the purpose of listening or even on the listener's intercultural competence. Ability to work within the legal profession requires skills in real life situations (in law firms, in a specific court system, and public sector). Firstly, while listening, the listeners generally have an idea about what they are going to hear. This might be hearing the answer to a question asked, or listening to a conversation relevant to any topic. Secondly, real-life listening situations include different voices and accents affecting general comprehension. Furthermore, the listening context has to be established so that the listener knows when and how to react. The purpose for listening to a discourse motivates attention and comprehension. The paper deals with the role of listening in teaching legal English both in regular English classes and ILEC preparation courses at the Faculty of Law in Osijek. It also analyses the strategies students of law use when listening to legal English bearing in mind the features of legal English (legal terminology, pronunciation of archaic Latin vocabulary, etc.). Listening could be the most important skill for legal professionals since their profession depends greatly on their skill to communicate successfully in real life situations (cases interpretations and people's lives depend on their listening skill).
