Sažetak
This study aims to map out the territory of (re)translations of children’s books from English to Croatian from the end of World War 2 to the 2000s. Using the bibliography of translated children’s books since 1945, created within the Croatian Science Foundation project “Building Intercultural Bridges Through Children’s Literature Translations”, we expect to trace down all retranslations of children’s books from English to Croatian in the selected period. In the course of the compilation of the corpus of retranslations, difficulties related to the very definition of a retranslation and its distinction from a revision (Koskinen and Paloposki 2010: 2) will be taken into account. The data regarding the choice of works to be retranslated are expected to bring a better insight into preliminary norms in translations of children’s literature in Croatia. Once the corpus of retranslations is established, the questions raised in the study include: Why have some titles been retranslated? Why some titles have not been retranslated? Who are the agents involved in the production of retranslations? Another set of data will be obtained through the analysis of the selected elements of the paratext of the detected retranslations: prefaces and afterwords, in which we expect to find explicit and implicit argumentation regarding a decision to produce a particular retranslation. The analysis of these data is expected to provide an insight into the complex web of motivations standing behind these decisions, related to the changes in the target culture context and its norms.
