Sažetak
Objectives: The main objectives of this study were to assess migration tendencies in the population of psychiatric trainees in Croatia nowadays and compare them to the results of the first Brain Drain study from 2013. Background: Workforce migration represents an important matter in mental health services across the world. There are many reasons for migration, including dissatisfaction with various aspects of work (psychiatry training program, salary, work organisation), that can lead to the lack of doctors in developing countries like Croatia. Croatia is a member of the European Union since 2013, which enables young psychiatrists to migrate more easily to the other European countries. Materials and methods: An online questionnaire was disseminated via online link to the registered Croatian adult and child and adolescent psychiatric trainees in 2013 (n=100) and in 2019 (n=141). The questionnaire included sociodemographic characteristics and questions regarding satisfaction with current work status and potential reasons for migration. Results: The 2013 response rate was 60% (N=60) and the 2019 response rate was also 60% (n=84). These findings showed that many psychiatric trainees consider leaving Croatia due to various reasons, with financial aspects and work organization being one of the most important ones. Conclusions: Migration of mental health professionals is a growing problem in Croatia. Emphasizing and understanding the major issues leading to migration can help to improve education, organization and satisfaction with professional environment.
