Sažetak
The general status of lampreys (family Petromyzontidae) in Bosnia and Herzegovina was critically assessed in order to determine the species composition and geographical distribution. This paper reviews available literature to provide critical analyses of the species reported. According to data available, their status can be estimated as indeterminate, largely due to the very limited records in the literature. In contrast to eight species mentioned in the literature as being present (Eudontomyzon danfordi, E. mariae, E. vladykovi, Lampetra fluviatilis, L. planeri, L. soljani, Lethenteron. zanandreai, Petromyzon marinus), only three species (E. vladykovi, L. soljani, P. marinus) seem to live there. Their distribution is recorded in waters of both, the Danube and the Adriatic Sea catchment. Given the serious deficiencies in the knowledge of taxonomical status of certain populations and geographical distribution of lampreys inhabiting the both catchments, a detailed study focused to use various biodiversity traits, such as phylogenetic, morphological and phenotypic characters, should be implemented to resolve these systematic issues. The problems related to various threats and conservation and future perspectives of protection management strategies have also been discussed. This paper provides a context for biodiversity considerations and conservation management with regard to lamprey species in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
