Sažetak
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Zagreb, Croatia, has been working on the improvement of the anatomy teaching in order to eliminate the formalin-fixed specimens used in the anatomy courses. The main goal is to implement durable anatomical specimens of body parts and organs of different domestic animal species and in teaching combine them with the fresh carcass dissection. In February and June 2018, formalin-fixed specimens utilized in previous anatomy courses were selected for further detailed dissection. Those were one canine thoracic and one pelvic limb, four canine, two equine and one ruminant head and neck halves. Skin, fascia and cutaneous muscles were removed. Skeletal muscles, blood and lymph vessels, nerves, lymph nodes and salivary and thyroid glands were dissected in details during more than 100 hours. All the specimens were photographed from the lateral and medial point of view after the dissection was done. The photographs were used to design anatomical illustrations of the dissected specimens. Photographs and illustrations were labeled with anatomical terms and will be offered to students in form of printed and digital teaching material (for example on the web page). The dissected specimens will be further processed into durable anatomical specimens through impregnation and plastination. Such durable anatomical specimens will be offered together with labeled photographs and illustrations to students of the anatomy courses so that they can gain necessary knowledge before approaching the fresh carcass dissection.
