Sažetak
The aim of this study was to provide quantitative data on Campylobacter spp. in samples of neck skins from broiler carcasses of chicken farmed and slaughtered in different regions of Croatia, in order to determine the contamination level according to the criteria set in EU Regulation 2017/1495 amending Regulation (EC) 2073/2005. A total of 1185 samples were collected between April and December 2018 in slaughterhouses located in central (n=825), eastern (n=115), southern littoral (n=120) and northern littoral (n=125) geographic region of Croatia. Sampling was performed as described by the Regulation and tested using standard method EN ISO 10272- 2:2017. Overall, Campylobacter spp. contamination level above 1000 cfu/g was found in 366 (31%) of tested samples. The percentage of the samples with the counts above 1000 cfu/g, was approximately equal with the samples originated from the central (284 or 34, 4%) and northern littoral region (40 or 32, 0%), followed by southern littoral (28 or 23, 3%) and eastern (16 or 13, 9%) region. Significant difference observed between the results achieved in four Croatia’s regions, may indicate implementation of various slaughtering practices and the influence of particular process operations. Considering that the level of contamination of Campylobacter spp. above 1000 cfu/g was found in almost one third of the tested samples, a certain amount of time is necessary to assess the usefulness of the recently established process hygiene criteria.
