Sažetak
Sport as a social phenomenon is closely related to society per se. Studying sports as a part of a society gains sociological understanding of sport and related issues such as gender issues. Most sports around the world are defined as men's activities, resulting in half of the world’s population generally being excluded or discouraged from participating in many sports (Coakley & Pike, 2009). Despite that, in recent years there is a big increase in women's participation in sports. In this paper we analyzed gender issues through futsal as a sport in the Croatian society. We have conducted nine in-depth, semi- structured interviews with the players of the Croatian Women's First Futsal League. The interviews were structured around four key themes: Sport in the Croatian society, Women in the Croatian society, Football/Futsal in the Croatian society, Women in football/futsal in the Croatian society. Although futsal is still a relatively new sport in Croatia, it is gradually expanding. As in football, in futsal there is also a trend of greater representation of male population than women. Many of interviewed players had to overcome “the man world” of football (futsal) barriers to stay active in those traditionally man defined activity. The results focused on data relating to how these female players entered futsal, their experiences in a male- defined traditional society and explaining the relationship between futsal and widespread beliefs about masculinity, femininity, sexuality, etc. Primary findings confirm the main hypothesis - sport could be used as a mirror of the Croatian society but also as a tool for changing stereotypes and prejudices.
