Sažetak
Due to a growing need for new treatments in the field of oncology as well as infective diseases, a search for new biologically active compounds from natural resources has been continuously in the focus of the pharmaceutical industry. Over recent decades, marine organisms especially took a lot of attention as an increased number of isolated active natural products or their derivatives were converted into commercial drugs. Presented research, therefore, aims to screen for the biological potential of the Adriatic Sea cnidarian, Eunicella cavolini or yellow gorgonian. This organism is a well-known colonial soft coral that is one of the most abundant species in the Mediterranean Sea with previously documented potential for isolation of antimicrobial, antiviral and antitumor bioactives. In particular, we (1) aimed to characterize the total the proteome of this coral using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and (2) evaluate the biological potential of the crude isolate obtained by using of green chemistry approach. The crude extract was furthermore fractionated to identify the most biologically active fraction for further chemical characterization. Herein, we present the first comparative results of total protein extraction and the in vitro screening data obtained on normal fibroblasts and tumor cell lines.
